Wrestling Season Ends with Disappointment, Pride
Every year, Eaton Rapids wrestlers have a goal: to win a state championship. Most years, the team falls a little short of that goal. This year’s team had plenty of ups and downs, wins and losses, cheers and tears. The team traveled to Battle Creek to compete in the Division 2 State Championship. In the first round, the Greyhounds faced a very strong St. Johns team. The Redwings had 6 wrestlers qualify for individual states, with 5 of those making it to the championship round. With that kind of competition, Coach Warriner did his best to build a lineup that would help the Greyhounds pick up some unexpected wins. But the Redwings were too much for the Greyhounds this year, beating them 51-17. St. Johns was beat later in the next round by Lowell, who want on to win the state championship.
Three Greyhounds continued their season at the Individual State Championship at the Palace in Auburn Hills. Seniors Justin Garza and Tully Chapman, and Junior Trevor Schnepp were part of the 896 wrestlers from all over the state, including the UP. All three wrestled tough, but the competition was fierce. Only Trevor was able to earn a medal, placing 6th at 152 lb. But the seniors leave with a sense of accomplishment and pride. Tully was a 2-time state qualifiers and had just over 100 wins. Justin was a 3-time state qualifier, state placer, and recently recorded his 150th win. Way to go hounds!! We are proud of you!!
